Despite all the scientific documentation of the seriousness of mercury vapor toxins released from fillings, and the very real potential for irreversible damage, the American Dental Association (ADA) has categorized the subject a frivolous concern', and persistently supports the continued use of mercury amalgam fillings with fanatical devotion.
This is not a new controversy, but one almost 150 years old. In 1845, the America Society of Dental Surgeons passed a resolution denouncing the use of amalgams as malpractice and further demanded that each member sign a pledge not to use amalgams. Expulsion from the society was automatic for any dentist not adhering to the restriction.
One and a half centuries later, the ADA has reversed itself and insists that the mercury in fillings is nothing to worry about. Really? At one time, this very same A.D.A. recommended that scrap amalgam, the material left over after filling a tooth, should be handled as gingerly as any toxic waste. No one was to touch it. It was to be stored underwater in sealed containers, and disposed of only through local health departments. Many experts agree that if some dentist introduced mercury based fillings today, the FDA would not approve its use in repairing teeth.
Prominent among U. S. activists seeking a Sweden-style ban on silver/mercury amalgam is Dr. Michael Ziff who has called mercury amalgam fillings "toxic time bombs." Outraged citizen anti-amalgam groups, chartered as DAMS (Dental Amalgam Mercury Syndrome), are active in many states, and lobby for legislative action. Small bands of highly dedicated courageous U.S. dentists have devoted themselves to raising public awareness, risking the wrath and scorn of their see-no-evil colleagues.
Richard Fischer, D.D.S. of Annandale, Virginia, a practitioner of what's been called "biocompatible dentistry," has found, "Eighty percent of patients experience some health benefits after amalgam replacement.
