CLEANING UP YOUR ACT: WHY ARE DENTISTS SO DOWN IN THE MOUTH?

For a long time, epidemiological researchers have puzzled over the unusually high incidence of suicide, divorce, alcohol and substance abuse among dentists. As a group, dentists have led all the professions in these unhappy statistics for many years.
Now at last, there may be an answer. Mercury toxicity does not end with the dental patient, but poses a serious occupational health threat to dentists as well. That became clear when in 1982, a research team from the University of Pennsylvania studied 300 dentists and found 10% with significant mercury levels in their body tissues. Of those, 70% suffered from mild neurological problems such as irritability, depression, anxiety and insomnia.
When University of Minnesota School of Dentistry researchers screened 1166 (1002 male and 163 female) dentists for undetected cardiac arrhythmias at the 1988 ADA/FDI World Dental Meeting, they found 14% of those dentists screened had an abnormal EKG showing one or more arrhythmias. Four percent were identified as having an arrhythmia that needed immediate medical follow-up. Two dentists were hospitalized with potentially life-threatening disorders that had not been previously identified.
Merely working in a building that houses dental offices can be hazardous. Polishing amalgams gives off considerable mercury vapors. If the building has sealed windows and central ventilation, employees and visitors may be exposed to toxic levels which far exceed OSHA limits, which are five times higher, by the way, than allowed by European standards.
