FIGHTING THE FREE-RADICAL FOE POWER UP WITH VITAMINS: HEART HELPERS
The latest research suggests some supplements are potentially more useful than others when waging your private war against heart disease. The one you are most apt to be familiar with is the old standby: Vitamin E. Not that many years ago, critics belittled its worth, calling it a "vitamin in search of a disease." Today, mainstream researchers hail it as a first-line defense against the free radical chain reaction.
Focussing on E for the moment, researchers at recent Vitamin E conferences have suggested that the antioxidant properties of E may reduce plaque formation by one-half or more. French investigators at the Pasteur Institute recently presented research suggesting Vitamin E fights heart disease by preventing LDL's (the low-density lipoproteins generally assumed to be the 'bad' cholesterol) from becoming 'rancid'.
The January, 1991 issue of the AmericanJournal of Clinical Nutrition noted that Vitamin E protects people against heart disease regardless of cholesterol levels. They based this conclusion on the findings of a large scale study of more than 100,000 people in 33 different population groups. The researchers hypothesized: "The antioxidant hypothesis is that Vitamin E prevents cholesterol from oxidizing in the artery walls, thereby preventing atherosclerosis.
Then there's the Optimal Vitamin Study, which provides persuasive evidence that "essential antioxidants, mainly
Vitamin E, may substantially counteract known risk factors for heart disease, especially elevated cholesterol and high blood pressure."
When William Mauer, M.D., a noted clinician, reviewed his 25 years of experience with Vitamin E in the treatment of blood clots and vascular disease, he added valuable insight. Reporting before the American Academy of Medical Preventics (now ACAM), Dr. Mauer told how he has routinely placed cardiac patients on a special brand of natural mixed tocopherols in dosage ranges of 1,600 to 2,400 units a day. At this dosage, he said, "I have observed dissolution of coronary scars, reversal of electrocardiographic abnormalities and dissolving of blood clots."
